How to Avoid Industrial Hose Failure

This article and accompanying video are excerpts from the Swagelok® Hose Selection Webinar presented by Swagelok Senior Product Manager, Doug Nordstrom.

We've seen many examples of the wrong hose used in particular applications. When you apply the right hose for your application, you can save significant costs.

Hose Failure Example One: Tire Press

Tire Press

In one instance, we found hoses that were moving up and down on a tire press running while running steam. They were consistently failing in under a month. The customer was able to analyze this and look at what type of hose was being applied, and they changed the hose type out to a more expensive PTFE hose. Result: A hose service life 20 times longer. The additional hose price actually saved the company money in the long run.

Hose Failure Example Two: Biopharm Application

In one particular situation that we encountered in the biopharmaceutical industry, a hose user was not planning for maintenance on its hoses. Result: Plenty of downtime costs and some safety concerns. By applying the right hose and then planning for the maintenance of these hoses, we were able to save that user more than $500,000 each year.

Hose Maintenance is Critical

Buying and maintaining a hose is similar to purchasing a car. You know you need to do maintenance and monitor your tires. Industrial hoses are similar. You should have some sort of preventive maintenance program associated with each hose because every hose will eventually fail and hose failures can create safety concerns that can prove very costly. The longer that planned lifespan, the better. The right hose in the right application will last a very long time.
